The Cottage style
Natural materials such as wood and stone and a few nostalgic touches are perfect for evoking the tranquility, charm and rural character of a cottage. But what other items contribute to this rustic and cozy style?
The materials
In a cottage bathroom, the wooden elements in particular stand out. Often in a slightly darker or grayer shade and preferably with a pronounced wood grain, visible knots and a rough and robust appearance. Depending on the shade chosen, a country bathroom can take on both a light and a dark character. You completely choose which way to go.
Natural stone also cannot be missing in a cottage bathroom. This can take the form of nice tiles on the floor, a terracotta basin or a natural stone sink. It may not be the cheapest solution, but its strong properties and longevity make it a durable choice.
The colors
In terms of color use, the cottage style is mainly defined by neutral tones that are also found in nature. No striking, bright colors, but rather shades of gray and beige. Try to avoid pure white, this is too modern and sterile for a cottage interior. Black, on the other hand, will do. Dark faucets and accessories provide an interesting contrast and add spice to your space without being industrial or too cool.
Faucet work is often used as a nod to the past and usually has a classic look. Think rotary knobs instead of levers or a rustic stand-alone faucet for the tub. Common colors are black, chrome and brushed gun metal.
Shapes and layout
Although the quiet look of a cottage bathroom is the ideal setting for a freestanding bathtub, a spacious walk-in shower is also perfect. It's all about relaxing cocooning, and that can obviously be done in both a luxurious bathtub and a well-designed walk-in shower.
Wood dominates, so it's best to keep the rest of your furniture as simple and minimalist as possible. A rustic piece of furniture does not require eye-catching handles or special design. Although sometimes a handle can add extra charm. Match the color to your faucet and lighting, so your end result will still be calm.
Since atmosphere and cosiness are so important in a cottage bathroom, think carefully about your lighting beforehand. Within this style, this can be a bit more. Think of a special wall lamp instead of indirect lighting or spotlights. Looking for even more coziness? Then choose lighting that you can dim.
