The Modern Chic style

A modern bathroom can easily be described with a single word: purity. Find out how to create such a modern bathroom yourself and what colors, materials and decoration to choose for it.

How do you create a modern bathroom?

First, an important clarification: a “modern” bathroom is not a “trendy” bathroom. On the contrary: a modern bathroom is one in which you feel perfectly at home for years. So it is important to design it according to your taste so that it matches your interior and you feel good in it. Not to go along with a temporary trend.

Modern chic

A few guidelines

  • In a modern bathroom, every piece of furniture and accessory radiates pure simplicity. Often, or almost exclusively, in immaculate white. There are no rough edges and no visible furniture handles. Even the metal furniture legs and mirror frames are painted white. Alternative to the brilliant matte or glossy white finish is light, natural wood.

  • A modern bathroom is also timeless. To ensure that it stands the test of time and that you never get tired of it, follow the principle “Less is more. This concept comes from the famous architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Central to it is the idea that only simplicity, uncluttered aesthetics and the omission of unnecessary elements can guarantee the beauty, functionality and clarity of a building (or a living space, in this case your bathroom).

  • Provide a personal touch, that way you avoid your minimalist bathroom becoming dull or colorless. With small details, you can easily make your own mark. Moreover, over time and if your tastes change, you can more easily replace such small, personal additions with others, without having to accompany a thorough renovation of your bathroom.

The colors

As you have already understood, bright or garish colors and busy patterns or prints are not welcome in modern bathrooms. You better go for white and black that are both classic and timeless. Moreover, these colors are a safe choice that you can combine with any other color. Go for the matte versions - for your faucet work, for example. Those will always stay in fashion.

A light palette

Do you find black and white a little too plain? Or do you want to make the atmosphere of your modern bathroom a little warmer? Then go for a palette of light beige or gray tones. Choose eggshell, cream, almond, sand, blonde and even powder pink for the beige range, and pearl, silver, moon, graphite, gray and mouse gray etc. for the gray range.

The art of detail: a colorful touch

Now that you have chosen soft colors for the walls, floor and your furniture, you can add some elements in brighter colors: some red accessories, a golden faucet, mustard yellow, rust or lime green bath linens. You can also choose an accent wall that you paint in a contrasting color or on which you hang wallpaper with geometric or vegetable prints. If you get tired of it, it can be repainted or wallpapered in no time.

The materials

Does it surprise you when we advise you to be inspired by nature when choosing materials for the bathroom? With wood and natural stone, you can create a soothing, calm and serene environment. Wood is the material of choice for the furniture, sink top and floor, while natural stone is used for the sink itself, walls and floor.

Supplements

Choose transparent glass for your shower enclosure - it goes perfectly with these materials. For the sink, go for translucent material or ceramic in a soft shade. Metal is also a good option: cast iron, brass and copper for a vintage look. Stainless steel and steel - brushed or shiny - are also suitable for accessories and faucets.

The art of detail: living materials

Avoid too much uniformity by embellishing furniture fronts with grooves. This will give a sense of rhythm and space to a small bathroom. Be sure to put some plants in your bathroom, too. That way you literally bring nature inside! Some plants also help purify the atmosphere by absorbing moisture from the bathroom. Think ivy, ferns, spider plants or aloe vera. Finally, wicker baskets as small storage units, a wool rug and an old wooden ladder as a towel rack create a natural, warm yet understated look.

Shapes and layout

Minimal shapes and clean lines are ideal for a minimalist bathroom where everything is about relaxing. But the most important thing is to keep the space as neat and orderly as possible. A sink with plenty of storage space, a walk-in shower, a towel warmer and a wall-mounted toilet are your allies in this regard!

For even more overview, choose a shower control that is as flat as possible and built into the wall. The same goes for your sink faucet, which can be recessed into the wall, and your overhead shower, which you integrate into the ceiling.

The art of detail: design where you least expect it

For a long time, radiators in the bathroom have been not only a source of heat, but also a place to hang towels so they dry faster. But there are also perfectly flat radiators, available in a wide range of colors that blend seamlessly into the room. Still others have geometric shapes that make them true works of art, without taking up extra space. Ideal for a highly modern bathroom.
